THE STORY OF BIGPACIFIC:
What is Bigpacific.com?
Bigpacific.com tells the stories of the Sunshine Coast, but in a travelogue format and from my unique point of view as webmaster with a 26 year history of living on the Coast. It’s my privilege to convey what it’s like tovisit here, work here and live here. My audience is wide-ranging, from potential visitors choosing a place to vacation, people planning to relocate, and locals wanting to see our beautiful region with fresh eyes.
My site is the premier web site for the Sunshine Coast – online since 1997 – and in fact was one of the very first community sites to go online when the Internet moved from mostly discussion groups and military/education sites to what we know now as the World Wide Web.
Why do people visit the site?
There are hundreds of pages of stories and information about the Sunshine Coast gathered over the last dozen years, plus thousands of images and now video about our region – from Howe Sound to Desolation Sound – and it grows every year. There’s also a business directory with hundreds of local businesses, who gain visibility on my high-traffic site and in turn that traffic funnels through to their own web sites.
People visit Bigpacific.com because it’s personal. It’s not a big advertising machine like a telephone directory, or a classifieds engine like Craig’sList. Visitors to the site don’t feel like they’re being marketed to – they feel like they’re having a conversation with a person who actually lives here and just loves to see people get the most they can out of the Coast, whether it’s visiting here or living here. It’s not a faceless marketing site like so many web sites dedicated to a region.
Many people who have moved here have told me that while they were planning and waiting to move, they used my site to stay in touch with the Coast, sometimes for years before they arrived. They found their realtor, tradespeople, schools, professional services, favourite stores and restaurants, all from sometimes thousands of miles away!
That’s the power of getting personal. It works just as well on the visitor side. Instead of just getting ads about rooms, dining spots, activities, visitors get introductions. There’s a huge difference – and it shows in how they interact with people once they get here. It’s often why people choose the Coast over other more well-known destinations in the region.
What is Bigpacific.ORG then? What’s the difference?
Bigpacific.ORG is the new social network for the Sunshine Coast. It’s like a Facebook or Myspace, but only for the Coast. You can create sub-communities through discussion groups, make new friends based on shared interests through the chat side, upload your own content (audio, video, photos), create your own blog, champion your favourite causes, or even tell your own story, whether it’s personal or business.
It’s 100% free to participate and share, and my goal is to give Coasters our own unique space to showcase our talents and collaborate together for the benefit of ourselves and our communities. It also gives people thinking of moving here or visiting a chance to ‘feel like a local’.
