It’s Sunshine Coast Arts Crawl Weekend… and the ShroomFest… and Sechelt Arts Festival – time to break out the rubber boots and get out and about on the Sunshine Coast.
There is absolutely no reason to be bored at home this weekend – whether you’re already on the Sunshine Coast, or in the Lower Mainland thinking “what to do, what to do”. With three major events and a raft of lesser but no less fun activities I double-dare you to sit on your keister doing nothing.
SECHELT ARTS FESTIVAL
First up, the continued excellence of the Sechelt Arts Festival. Every year this showpiece event gets better, and 2012 has already put on offer an excellent Juried Arts Show at the Seaside Centre, two mainstage events last weekend at the Ravens Cry Theatre, and random art attacks and workshops around the Village all week.
I’ve put together a little slideshow of last weekend’s highlights along with a review on a separate post, and you can expect more of the same high-calibre events this weekend.
|Ravens Cry Theatre Saturday October 20 8pm:
The Haunt of a Woman
Van Django & Todd Clark
There is a full schedule of workshops for this week at the venues of the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre & The Sound Studio, all listed on SecheltArtsFestival.com.
SUNSHINE COAST ARTS CRAWL
The Sunshine Coast Arts Crawl is now in its 3rd year and this year presents 110 galleries and art studios, which represents over 275 artists from Langdale to Lund (or, Lund to Langdale depending on your starting point!).
Brochures/Maps are available at shops, stores, cafes, restaurants and visitor information centres coast-wide, and an iPhone version of the crawl is downloadable at icrawl.garylittle.ca in your iPhone browser.
There’s also a 2012 Online Art Auction, full schedule of Friday Demos & Events, Sunshine Coast Arts Crawl Passport Prizes, a downloadable Arts Crawl Poster in PDF, and artcrawl blog.
SUNSHINE COAST MUSHROOM FESTIVAL
The Sunshine Coast Mushroom Festival has several events on Friday and Saturday.
For SCSHROOM members only, there is a morning foray on Friday October 19th at 11am with guest expert Daniel Winkler. You must be a paid-up member with a signed liability waiver on file with SCSHROOM to attend. Membership forms and information is available on the club web site. Membership is $20 ($25 for families) and the foray is $30 pp.
Friday evening at 7pm Daniel will be giving a talk at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden on “Beloved Edibles around the World”. Cost is $10 and the address is 5941 Mason Road Sechelt.
Saturday from 11-4 at the Pender Harbour Community Hall in Madeira Park is the main event, with displays of local mushrooms, ID tables, vendors of local produce, delicious edibles with local mushrooms, books and gifts, as well as food and dyeing demonstrations. Free for members, $3 for non-members.
Saturday Night is the signature Gourmet Dinner with Wine Pairings at The Restaurant at Painted Boat Resort. Chef Spencer Watts will create an amazing meal to accompany the presentation by Daniel Winkler, Edible Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest. $90/per person, pre-registration required by calling 604.883.2456.
