For the love of trails!

Wilson Creek/Chapman Creek Trail System created by Sunshine Coast Trails

I stumbled across a fabulous site this week – Sunshine-Coast-Trails.com. Created by Sunshine Coaster Becky Wayte as a labour of love (hey, I SO get that), Sunshine Coast Trails has an ever-expanding compendium of both hiking and biking trails across the Sunshine Coast.

A phenomenal amount of work has gone into this web site – head to the Halfmoon Bay Map and you’ll see what I mean. The map shows all of the trails in the Halfmoon Bay area, and if you mouse over them you’ll see the name; click on them and you’ll be taken to the trail link in the list of all trails in Halfmoon Bay.

I must admit my hiking repertoire is limited and I tend to go where I usually go. Lately I’ve been getting bored and wanting to expand my territory and I was shocked to see the number of hiking/biking trails in my own backyard. I can also see why the mountain biking is so diverse and interesting to off-Coasters – the advanced Huigis starts out in Porpoise Bay Provincial Park, then turns into Duggies, a Triple Black Diamond trail, which morphs into the well-named Jekyll & Hyde. Sounds extreme to me!

I can see from this site that I’ve got years of great hikes ahead of me, and possibly a few introductory bike rides!

Which leads me to…

OFF THE EDGE ADVENTURE SPORTS

Off the Edge Adventure Sports is located in Sechelt on the northwest side of Wharf Avenue – next to 5517 Sushi. You can see their bikes out in the open area in front of the Bank of Montreal most days of the week.

OTEAS offers bike rentals by the hour, half day and full day. They are Norco Storm or Norco Liquid (hard and soft tail/full suspension), and there are even demo bikes available for full days (Norco Sight, Range, Truax, Shinobi, Brodie Crib, Holeshot).

Off the Edge also offers tours/instruction for hikers, trail runners, beginner bikers and family groups (minimum age 10 years). The ‘First Timer’ aims to give riders an introduction into mountain biking, from bike selection/setup and gear fitting, basic off road riding instruction & tips, and a guided ride on a beginner trail. The goal is to give beginner riders an amazing first experience, and is highly recommended if you are new to biking off-road.

Other courses and clinics offered by Off the Edge are a one-evening Bike Maintenance Course, Fundamentals of Biking, and a second intermediate level Introduction to Mountain Biking.
