GEOGRAPHY:
Roberts Creek is Area D of the Sunshine Coast Regional District
(SCRD). It covers 3000 hectares including a 300 metre offshore zone,
approximately 15% of which is Agricultural Land Reserve and 16%
is Managed Forest Lands or Provincial Forest. Geologically, it falls
within the eastern section of the Georgia Depression, a coastal
trough extending from Alaska to the Gulf of California and consisting
of numerous straits, the Georgia Lowland and adjacent Coast Mountains.
Elevation varies from sea level to 375 metres. There are three major
habitat areas: Woodland, Streamside and Coastal Waterfront, each
of which supports a variety of unique animal and plant species.
A total of thirteen creeks cross the region, flowing into the Gulf
of Georgia.
Hiking in Roberts Creek awards
lovely views, such as these foggy woods in early fall.

VEGETATION:
Natural vegetation consists chiefly of coniferous forest (red cedar,
hemlock, Douglas fir and lodgepole pine) with some deciduous trees
(broadleaf maple and red alder) and mixed ground cover (salal, fern
and moss). Along the rocky shoreline and in exposed bedrock areas,
pine and arbutus thrive. Common mammals in the area are coastal
blacktail deer, Douglas squirrels, bush rabbits and raccoons. Marine
mammals include harbour seals, Stellar sea lions, sea otters, mink
and sixteen species of whales and dolphins, chiefly killer whales
(orcas). Common fish are chum and coho salmon, cutthroat trout and
shellfish such as mussels, oysters and clams. Marine birds in the
area include bald eagles, great blue herons, Canada geese, osprey,
cormorants, loons, sandpipers and coots.

Mouth of Roberts Creek
The population of Roberts Creek is expected to double in the next 20 years. The percentage of children under 19 residing at home and the number of adult residents below retirement age are greater in Roberts Creek than in any other area in the region. Translated, this means there are lots of baby boomers and their families living here. Although no demographic statistics exist, the population of dogs per capita is also higher in the Creek than in any other region.
Housing in the Creek reflects the area's origins as a rural settlement and summer residence area. Dwellings vary in size and age from small summer cottages dating back to the Union Steamship era (1889-1959) to transplanted housing barged over from the mainland to huge contemporary homes with modern architectural flair. 93% of all dwellings are single detached homes. 5.5% of all dwellings are considered seasonal.

As indicated by the above chart, winters are more wet than cold, often with no snow at lower elevations. At higher levels, snow is frequent. Mild winters and abundant precipitation make this area green and blooming year round.

SERVICES & BUSINESS:
Roberts Creek is within the Roberts Creek Fire Protection District,
serviced by over 30 members of the Volunteer Fire Department. For
medical services, residents travel to St. Mary's Regional Hospital
in Sechelt or to doctors in either Sechelt or Gibsons. Ambulance
service is from Sechelt, administered by the Coast Garibaldi Health
Unit. The Canadian Coast Guard hovercraft, the Aerovac helicopter
service and the Sunshine Coast Search and Rescue crew are also available
in emergency situations.
There are no churches in the Roberts Creek area, although there are Baptist meetings held in the elementary school community use room each week. There are several denominations represented in nearby Wilson Creek, Sechelt and Gibsons.
Commercial development is minimal in Roberts Creek (the locals prefer it that way) and industrial development is non-existent. Home businesses and services, however, are abundant and diverse, including bed & breakfast accommodation, custom furniture, sign-making, sculpture and pottery, massage therapy and pet care.

Cliff Gilker Park - a lovely wooded ramble
Other facilities include several neighbourhood parks, three regional parks (Cliff Gilker, Flume Road Park and a tiny but beautiful day-use park at the mouth of Roberts Creek), and a provincial park with camp sites. There are three summer camps for children: Camp Byng for Boy Scouts, Camp Olave for Girl Scouts and Camp Douglas, run by the Presbyterian Church. The Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club, a 9-hole course on the corner of Highway 101 and Roberts Creek Road, is open to the public.
