UPDATE re DOG PARK & Fort Mc Murray Initiatives:

RE BARKfest supports Fort Mc Initiatives:

SUNSHINE COAST dog lovers 100% SUPPORT our Fort Mac Friends in need!!! We will be undertaking two very important initiatives at the event. BOTH will be to support and assist pets displaced by the recent Fort MacMurray fires. This disaster hits really close to home in so many ways. They are in for a long recovery.

1) We will be having a hot dog BBQ, by donation, with all monies going to Alberta Rescues/SPCA/Humane Societies to help them out in their efforts to give the best care to the many newly ‘homeless’ pets. A few of our local First Responders will be on hand dolling out the BBQ!

2) We will be handing out our (s)WAG bags of goodies to the first 50 people who bring a donation of pet food or other pet supplies for the Fort MacMurray Pets.

RE the actual DOG PARK:

The SCRD is putting in a great deal of effort to make the park an awesome place for dogs to hang out with their folks. The park is looking great. There are trees all the way around, so there is LOTS of shade. The area is very easily accessible. The SCRD has created a few really great walking trails in the back forest. Before the Grand Opening Celebrations the SCRDThere will be benches, table(s), potty, signage, water, etc, set up. The space is gonna be AMAZING and very appealing for Dogs and their humans.

This event may be located in Gibsons however it is for the ENTIRE COAST to come out and CELEBRATE EVERYTHING DOG!!! MEET new dog folks, dog friends and great dog loving businesses. THANK our First Responders. SUPPORT our displaced fur friends affected by the devastating fires in Alberta.

  1. Re: Shirley Macey park. Wondering if you have a Big Dog and Little Dog separation, with fencing ? Also, we have a reactive dog who could be classed as a Yellow Ribbon dog ( BTW so great that there are a few signs around re. Yellow Ribbon dogs …) Generally he cannot be in an off-leash area unless it is empty, and it must be fenced. The reasons for this are A) He hunts wildlife so thus does not have good recall, and B) he is elderly and can be reactive with large dogs he doesn’t know.
Our dog lives his life on the leash and we’re fine with that, but in some cities and towns there are fenced off-leash parks that have separate ‘yards’ that happen to accomodate Yellow Ribbon dogs. Once in a while it’s a treat to find such facilities !

Sorry – somehow this never got to me. I don’t think Shirley Macey has that just yet but it’s a great suggestion… I’ll ask the organizers!
